At Team Recovery Technologies, we believe that recovery is a lifelong journey—and one of the most powerful ways to sustain it is through strong alumni communities. In this video, our Alumni Consultant, Jaron Dixon, shares his personal story and answers two of the most common questions treatment centers ask about alumni programs.

Why Alumni Programs Matter

Jaron’s experience is rooted in his own family’s journey. Growing up, he watched his older brothers struggle with addiction, unsure why things suddenly changed. Today, both are in recovery, and one credits attending an alumni meeting every week for two years as one of the most important pieces of his sobriety.

That’s why alumni programs are not just an optional add-on—they are a cornerstone of long-term recovery. Alumni communities provide a place for graduates to continue their healing, stay connected with peers, and give back by supporting those just starting their journey.

How to Start an Alumni Community

One of the most common questions treatment centers ask is: How do we start an alumni program? The answer is simple—start small, but stay consistent.

  • Weekly Meetings: Establish a regular, dependable meeting time and day. Consistency builds trust and engagement.
  • Immediate Transition: Ensure clients are rolled into the alumni community as soon as they finish treatment.
  • Service Roles: Empower alumni with responsibilities—like service positions—that give them purpose and accountability.

This approach creates a sustainable, meaningful community where alumni feel valued and supported.

Why Aftercare Is Essential

Recovery doesn’t end after 30, 60, or 90 days. While treatment programs provide structure, the transition into daily life can be overwhelming. Alumni communities offer:

  • Peer Support: Continued connection with those who went through the same program.
  • Inspiration: Guidance from those who came before.
  • Leadership Opportunities: A chance to inspire and mentor those who come after.

These elements not only strengthen recovery but also reduce relapse risk and increase treatment program retention.
